Leadership in the Classroom: Developing a Leadership Curriculum
Developing a leadership curriculum can be a complex endeavor that is difficult to navigate. For many institutions, co-curricular leadership development efforts have been underway for many years. Indeed, many programs nationwide are incredibly successful. For institutions that are resource-deficient in regard to staff and budget, the idea of engaging in the process of proposing a curricular leadership program is daunting. Who will teach the classes? Who will coordinate the program? How will we interact with faculty and academic departments? How are we possibly going to afford this? As leadership studies gains in legitimacy as a field of study, the time is right to make a case for beginning a curricular leadership program or advancing current curricular leadership initiatives. As a partnership opportunity between Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, curricular leadership programs are politically attractive for institutions and incredibly useful for students.
Participants will engage in in several learning environments including lecture, discussion, reflection, small groups, a panel, and round-tables. Additionally, participants will:
- Have an understanding of the history of leadership theory, education, and development.
- Examine the different ways that leadership courses ignite leadership for students and influence change on college campuses.
- Understand the various institutional strengths, opportunities, areas for improvement, and threats that might affect the curriculum development of a leadership course.
